A sense of tranquility and openness is felt when looking at the landscape of the Five Finger mountain backdrop. Blessed with natural sandy beaches, and a diverse gift of charms for all to enjoy, the east of Kyrenia is noticeably under-developed compared to other parts of town. It is home to ample olive groves, and has scenic views of the ‘Five Finger' mountains. This part of Kyrenia is especially ideal for those looking to relax and unwind, and is located within easy access to downtown Kyrenia by a main road route to town centre. East Kyrenia is also close to the international standard golf course of Esentepe, and is the start of a passage of mountain roads to Famagusta, and Karpaz. For those looking to be inspired by legends, you will not be disappointed with Buffavento castle set east of the foothills from this part of town. Buffavento castle is one of the most important castles by which a natural defence of Cyprus was maintained over the centuries. Buffavento when translated means "Defiant of winds", given for the fact that the Buffavento castle is set high in the mountain range and its surrounded by spectacular panoramic views. It is said that the Byzantine King Isaac Comnenus fled to the castle when Richard the Lionheart captured Cyprus in 1191. The area is also chosen by the ‘Carretta Carretta' turtles, and ‘Green' turtles, which come and lay their eggs at over eighty nesting beaches mainly to the east of Kyrenia, including ‘Turtle beach'. Here you can book in a night watch and see the turtles come to shore and lay their eggs in June, and hatch them in August.
