Famagusta is a sanctuary of ancient history. Once you set into the old town, one cannot help but feel the spirit of the past. The growth of the city began from the 14th century, where it was the wealthiest port in the Mediterranean. This wealth is no longer so apparent; however the wealth of historic cathedrals, Palaces, and Churches creates an impression itself.
Old Town Famagusta is surrounded by ancient reinforced walls, once fortifying against the Ottomans, now an atmospheric home to patisseries, art and craft shops, cafes, and local clothes stores. This is an ideal spot to spend a lazy day or early evening, winding down and taking in the Cypriot lifestyle. The next suburb of Famagusta follows from the ancient ruins of Salamis. Established by a hero from the Trojan War, we now see the Salamis ruins in the area; remains of an ancient roman commercial centre. Salamis has an outstanding local sandy beach for relaxing, and local shops, and taverns are accessible by main road route of transport. Further on lies the traditional fishing village of Bogaz, which offers unparalleled fresh fish famous throughout the island. The village has its own Yacht harbour, and sandy beaches around it. Locally there are a good range of restaurants serving Cypriot cuisine and fish, also there are a few local Tavernas, and cafes. To many, the most appealing part of the village is the sense of relaxation once you enter the area. The slow pace of life, humble surroundings, and the Cypriot feel that has maintained over the years, gives a perfect setting for a relaxing getaway.
